Build with The New A.P.

The Knowledge-Based Ecosystem

A federated, Knowledge-Based Ecosystem for large scale collective organisation.

The New A.P. is an Africa-centred, federated, knowledge-based ecosystem — a new model of social infrastructure designed for a connected world. It establishes a shared framework through which communities, organisations, knowledge, resources and activity across Africa and its global diaspora can reinforce one another, develop shared capabilities and contribute to long-term social and economic progress.

As an organisation, The New A.P. provides shared purpose, governance and coordination, while its federated structure enables organisations and initiatives to retain their identities, preserve local autonomy and help shape the wider ecosystem over time.

From Fragmented Activity to Collective Progress

Digital technology now makes new forms of coordination possible, enabling people and organisations to exchange knowledge, share resources and sustain cooperation across boundaries. But connection alone does not ensure effective cooperation. Across Africa and its global diaspora, valuable work is already taking place, yet too much remains fragmented. Knowledge can be difficult to access, promising ideas struggle to move beyond individual initiatives, and resources do not always reach where they are most needed.

The New A.P. responds to this coordination gap through shared structures that help independent efforts align, combine their strengths and build on one another. Drawing on African knowledge, cultural foundations and contemporary experience, it supports social innovation through new forms of cooperation, enterprise and institution-building. The aim is cumulative progress: knowledge developed through one initiative can inform another, shared resources can support new activity, and value generated through enterprise can be reinvested in skills, institutions and infrastructure.

An Integrated Ecosystem Architecture

The New A.P. is organised through three interconnected layers forming one architecture: the Cooperation Layer, Knowledge Layer and Activity Layer.

The Cooperation Layer connects organisations, institutions and initiatives through a Federated Network Structure that preserves local autonomy. Shared principles and working arrangements guide cooperation, while communication and collaboration platforms help sustain relationships and coordinate activity across the network.

The Knowledge Layer organises knowledge through the Knowledge Commons, where research, cultural knowledge, practical experience, tools, methods and resources can be contributed, developed, accessed and circulated across the ecosystem. It supports collective learning by enabling knowledge to be reused, tested and adapted across different contexts.

The Activity Layer brings together the Creative, Enterprise and Digital sectors through an Integrated Tri-Sector Model. Together, these sectors provide a shared structure for education, research, cultural expression, enterprise development, digital infrastructure and wider social and economic activity.

Across the three layers, relationships enable cooperation, knowledge informs activity, and practical experience generates new knowledge, resources and value that strengthen the ecosystem over time.

Within AISP’s shared framework, The New A.P. represents the Build element. It is developing the structures, platforms, institutional models and forms of coordination that allow connection to become organisation. Grounded in the third sector’s commitment to collective benefit, its framework supports cooperation among independent organisations, communities and initiatives while preserving their autonomy. It gives practical structure to shared purpose, helping them build capacity, sustain their work and direct resources towards long-term social progress.

First Application

01

The New A.P. is beginning its development within the creative sector, providing a practical context in which to test and refine the ecosystem model. This work will connect existing strengths, organise shared resources and support collaborative activity, generating knowledge and experience to inform development across the wider Tri-Sector Model.

Test and refine the model within the creative sector.

Develop and refine

02

Bring together organisations, initiatives, knowledge, and resources.

Connect existing strengths

03

Use lessons from this work to guide development across the Tri-Sector structure.
