Learn with ALTA
ALTA develops a new approach to learning grounded in African ways of knowing, connecting concepts, creativity, critical thought, and practical application within a more integrated model of education. Drawing on African philosophies, artistic traditions, symbolic systems, and lived experience, it brings together knowledge from across disciplines, cultures, communities, and everyday life. Rather than treating learning as the accumulation of isolated information, ALTA focuses on the concepts, relationships, and patterns that help people understand how knowledge connects, how meaning is formed, and how learning can be applied in practice.

Reconnecting Knowledge and Learning
Education is often organised into separate subjects, facts, and categories. While this can make knowledge easier to structure, it can also make it harder to see how ideas connect and how learning relates to culture, community, and everyday life. ALTA responds by reconnecting knowledge across disciplines, creativity, culture, and lived experience. At the centre of this approach are concepts that help organise understanding and reveal relationships between different forms of knowledge. Ideas such as balance, interdependence, systems, cycles, identity, and change become starting points for inquiry, helping learners recognise patterns, make connections, ask better questions, and apply knowledge to real-world challenges.

How ALTA Works
ALTA begins as a programme of education, research, philosophy, and culture, with the longer-term aim of developing a wider learning infrastructure through which knowledge can be explored, shared, and carried forward. It creates spaces for collective learning and inquiry, supported by educational resources and digital content that allow learning to continue beyond individual sessions. Its approach brings together concepts, symbols, stories, creative expression, observation, reflection, and lived experience as interconnected ways of exploring and understanding knowledge.

ALTA Within AISP
Within AISP’s shared framework, ALTA represents the Learn dimension. It develops the knowledge, culture, and capacity through which people, communities, and institutions can deepen understanding, develop shared language, and apply learning over time. In this way, ALTA strengthens the learning dimension of social infrastructure — supporting how people interpret the world, generate ideas, share knowledge, and develop the intellectual and cultural capacity needed for lasting social progress.

African-Centred Concept-Based Learning
01
ALTA is currently in early development, beginning with its first African-centred concept-based learning programme. This programme will establish the foundations for ALTA’s wider learning infrastructure, providing a practical model that can be developed, tested, and extended over time.
